How Many Christmases do you get?

Presents-Dec2009 My 5 year old once asked me: "How many Christmases have you had?" Sneaky way to find out my age... So I told her. Then she asked, "Well, how many do you get?"

That question still rings in my ear. Especially in this last month, when 11 friends/relatives' time on the planet expired. They ranged in age from 43 to 106!

What if you could use a magic light to read your expiration date, maybe on the bottom of your foot... Would it change how you live? Do you have forever? Or do you have another week?

What if you knew this would be your last Christmas... your last Hannukah... your last New Year's Eve? How would you celebrate?

I was feeling a little grumpy about some end-of-the-year business chores I had to get done. Then a little voice tapped at my inner ear: "Bill would be really happy to be cleaning out his business files for the new year. Laurie would give anything to be fussing about how to organize for taxes with a new computer system."

Oh. Right.

Bill and Laurie are gone. Checked out of this planet. I guess I can get my stuff done without being grumpy. Then I'll go celebrate the holidays with friends. Something they can't do anymore, unless they are angels.

My 4th grade teacher, Frieda Swift, was one of the people in my life who left. She was 106. Up until last year, she was still scooting around the nursing home in her wheelchair, reading to the other residents ~ some of whom had been her students! Go Frieda!

I want to be like that.

How about you?

Enjoy today. Enjoy these Holidays as if they are your very last. For all you know, they are. Yes, we all have challenges. This has been a hard year for a lot of people. Enjoy the holidays anyway.

What's YOUR Expiration Date?

Blessings and Happy Holidays -- Really,
Beth

The Word From (Nurse) Xena!

Xena atComputer

It's Christmas EVERY day for me! So I have had 4,223 Christmases so far, and if we Chihuahuas live to be 18 years old, that means I get 2,352 more Christmases.

But I don't see what the big deal is in counting! Just be in the room when you are in the room! You two leggeds make things sooooo hard.

Look - sometimes we furbabies get yelled at. Like Beth has yelled at me for barking at Lezard lately. He's not doing so well and he bumps into things on account of his cat-eracks. I'm warning him. But Beth thinks I'm being mean. So I wait for a minute or two, then go sit on her lap so she will calm down. Then I let her pet me. That usually does the trick.

Maybe I will have to keep the nurses hat on longer for Lezard. I told him not to chase those cats around the back yard. I think that's how he caught the cat-eracks. They have cooties. He never listens.

Seems like I'm the only healthy one around here. It's a good thing I agreed to live in Phoenix. Beth would be lost. Besides, who would write her newsletter for her? Hmmmm?

Thanks Jaimee for the wonderful note. I'd live with you, but Beth and Lezard need me.

Everyone have a wonderful Christmas this week and a Happy New Year. From the sounds of things, it has been really hard on a lot of you. Go down to the pound and hug a puppy. You'll feel better. But stay away from those CATS! (you know what I mean!)

Hugs,
Nurse Xena
PS - thanks for being Beth's friend, and for reading these little notes once a month. It's great to have you on board! Now, share it with a friend, or send me a note!
